Vanity Sizing

I had a pretty long post typed up yesterday about my day on Wednesday (which wasn't a good day) however, I decided to put off posting it because I wanted to think about it before I put out for the world (8 people) to see.  I'm glad I did.  I'm not as mad as I was and I don't want to give the wrong impression about anyone in my life.  I love my life dearly and am so happy to be surrounded by such loving people, especially Chris, and I don't want to give anyone the opportunity to think badly of my loved ones. 

I will tell you that Chris did something Wednesday that made me so angry I cried from anger, which I have never done.  What he did was dangerous and stupid and I had typed up (in my anger) a long post about it.  But he feels extremely remorseful and bad about it so there's no need to continue to harp on it in my head, which having it on here would do.  All is well, everyone is safe and happy.  =)

I decided not to run yesterday.  I was planning on it, but I've only had one day off of running this week so I decided I'd take another.  I did do my kettlebell workout and I did lots of crunches and some push-ups.  I did 25 push-pus and my arms were like jelly afterwards.  I wish they were stronger.  But I guess the kettlebell and the push-ups will make them stronger.  =)

I am doing absolutely nothing for Labor Day this year.  I am going to run every day this weekend, and will maybe try a long run.  It is hard for me to realize that my long run this week will be 4 miles when a couple months ago I was doing that on a daily basis.  I am looking forward to my really boring weekend. Actually, I will have to take Damian school shopping.  School starts on Wednesday and he really needs some clothes and some school supplies.  :-)

I went to Goodwill on Wednesday with Damian to get some jeans.  We were able to get 6 pairs of jeans, a shirt for me, and a coffee mug for $39.  I love finding good clothes at Goodwill, or Value Village.  But Damian has a hard time finding shirts that he likes there, and Middle School is such a fashion show that I can't bare to let him go wearing crappy shirts.  ; )  Seriously, he's gotten pretty picky about his clothes, so I'm willing to go somewhere else for shirts.  Jeans are so expensive though, and you can usually find good ones at second hand stores.

I hate vanity sizing.  I don't know if you've heard of it, but it's where manufacturers, or stores, or whoever, decided to make a size 12 a size 10 or a size 10 a size 8, just so when someone goes to try on a size 12 pair of pants they are pleasantly surprised to find that they are too big and go get size 10 pants.  However, because of "vanity sizing" the size 12 are now actually a 14 and the 10 are a 12.  (Am I being confusing?)  I have a good picture of it here.  Anyway, the last pairs of pants I bought about 10 months ago or so have been falling off of me.  So I decided to get some pants at Goodwill.  The pants that were falling off are a size "10" and since they were too big, but knowing that some pants run big, I decided to go to the size 10 section at Goodwill.  It was very frustrating to try on 6 pairs of pants and half of them were too small.  They should have been too big since the pants I own are a "10" and are too big.  =(  Anyway, I ended up finding 3 pairs that were in the 10 section that fit pretty good.  One of them I can't find a size on them, but I'm thinking, from how big they are they are probably a 12. 

That last paragraph feels really confusing, so I'm hoping you followed okay.  =)

Next week I am going to go to Leavenworth with my sister for a strictly girls weekend.  I am looking forward to it so much.  It was supposed to be a celebration for me stopping breast feeding, but I am still nursing Maddox before he goes to bed.  I know it's not much, but I didn't do it a couple weeks ago and I hurt so bad.  So we'll see how I feel after a weekend.  Maybe that's how I'll stop, I am kinda tired of doing it, so I don't mind if he is uninterested or my milk dries up by the time I get back. 

Well, I guess I will get off my butt and go run. =)

Sitting disease

Melinda at Does this Scale Make Me Look Fat hosts "Stop by and say hi" every Saturday.  Her question this week was:
What is your favortite fair or festival food?
My favorite fair food is the elephant ears.  I also love cotton candy, but I think elephant ears are highest on my must haves.  I was actually pretty disappointed this year when we went to the Skagit County Fair.  I completely forgot to have one!  I was pretty bummed when I got home.  I didn't even get cotton candy this year.  However, the fair was a lot of fun.  It was Maddox's first time and he loved the animals.  I did show some pictures of the fair here.
                                                     

This last weekend was the last summer weekend I will have this year in eastern WA.  I went over there to pick up D and we went on my Dad's boat.  It was a lot of fun.  I enjoyed it a lot better this time because we went to a different spot.  The last time we went, we went to Moses Lake (which is the name of a town and the lake the town surrounds), which was fun, but we couldn't really get out of the boat and swim much.  We just did some innertubing and then went to the park and ate dinner.  This time we went to Potholes (link takes you to info on Potholes, about halfway down the page is the history of the park).  This park is a lot better to go boating in because there are lots of sandbanks and shorelines that you can pull your boat up to and then get out and swim.  Some places there is very steep dropoffs, so there isn't much of a wading area.  Luckily we found a really nice area (it's a pretty busy park in the summer and we were there Saturday). 

I went swimming with Damian and my nephew Matthew for a long time while my Mom and sister watched Maddox for me.  We had dinner there, my mom made fried chicken the night before just to take with us.  I think Maddox ate more sand than anything else.  =)  I'm surprised he didn't poop out a sandbox the next day.  lol!  I think Maddox had a good time.  He walked around in the sand and played in the water (as long as it was just to his ankles) and ate more sand.  =) 






After we had played in the water for most of the evening (we got there later-about 4pm) my Dad took us tubing on the boat, and of course that was a lot of fun too.  =)  We finally left around 7:30 and I think everyone was tired by that time.  I realize that the "official" end to summer is Labor Day weekend, but I really felt last weekend was more the end of my summer.  Coming home the weather has been steadily cooler and is definitely getting that "fall" feel.

Reading my blogs today, I came across a term I'd never heard of before.  Mary at A Small Loss made a comment about "sitting disease."  I thought that was very interesting, so I googled it (I google everything) and found this article.

I also found this page where it says women who sit more than 6 hours a day are 94% more likely to die than those that sat 3 hours or less.  I find that statistic very interesting . . . the last I knew 100% of women (and 100% of men) die.  But it is an interesting read.  =)
                                               

Yesterday I went for an almost 3 mile run.  I wasn't aiming for 3 miles, so I wasn't annoyed when I didn't quite reach it, but it was a nice surprise that I had gone that far.  I am still walking a little at times.  I just don't feel 100% comfortable running the whole time.  My leg still aches sometimes after my run and today I can definitely feel little twinges here and there.  But to have gone 3 miles (almost) was nice and to not have much pain last night or today is great.  I can see a light at the end of the tunnel and hope that in a few weeks I'll be able to run the whole way and have no ache afterwards.  =)

Tech Questions


1.  PC or Mac? I use a PC.  The last time I used an Apple computer I was in 7th grade or so when that was all that was out.  =) 

2. When did you get your first computer?  I got my first computer when I was a Senior in college.  Chris said we were buying it for my school work (we were just married) but he used it to play the game Everquest more than I used it for schoolwork.

3. Do you use cable, DSL or something else?  I have cable internet. 

4. When choosing a laptop, do you think it’s more important to choose the fastest one, or the lightest one? I use my laptop primarily for fun stuff, Facebook, blogging, email . . . so I bought my most recent one based on the price, cheap.  =)

5. What kind of cell phone do you own?  Do you like it? All my smartphones have been Droids.  My sister got an iPhone recently and I like it.  I may cave and join the iCult.  =)

6. How do you carry your laptop when you travel?  I don't travel much expect by car to my parents' house, so it just goes in my laptop case.

7. How many e-mails do you send on an average day? Not that many.  I send several a day for work and then a couple to my family, but not always to my family as sometimes we don't have a conversation going. 

8. Do you ever blog using your iPad or similar tablet? I don't have a tablet.
9. What do you use more often – a desktop or a laptop? I have a desktop at work that is what I use, but at home we don't have a desktop.  Only my laptop.

10.  As a blogger, are there other gadgets that you need to get the job done?  If so, what are they?  I use my phone for pictures.  Once in awhile I will blog on my phone, but I don't like to, it's harder.  =)

Happy Friday!

I finally went to my Scale Obsession page and updated the weight.  Maybe it was only because I saw 163.0 on the scale today . . . I'd like it to be because I'm trying to be honest, but I think it was just because I saw a lower number.  Anyway, it's nice to see a lower number today.  However, how honest is that number when I see 165.8 everyday?  Although, yesterday I saw 164.8, so that is a positive thing.  I've been thinking of doing an average for a more accurate account of my weight.  Every time I step on the scale I write it down (and I'll admit, I step on it multiple times a day).  So this last week for 5 days, in the morning, I saw 165.8.  Once I saw 168, and once I saw 161.8 and yesterday I saw 164.8 and today 163. Obviously, my math is wrong because it came out to 128.8  =)  But I like that number.  The real number is 165.2 . . . ugh!  How frustrating, but could I expect anything less?

Anyway, today I'm going to eastern WA again.  This time to pick up Damian.  He's been there for the last 2 weeks.  I don't really want to go.  I've been over a lot in the last few months and I've had a really busy summer, so it would be nice to just chill at home.  Next weekend will be busy getting ready for school.  Although, I'll try to do it over the week because I don't like waiting till the VERY last min. 

I feel kinda guilty, and you can't tell Damian, but I haven't missed him much this year.  He has been going over there for 3 or 4 years for a couple weeks in the summer and every time before this I have missed him a lot.  However, this year, I barely noticed he was gone.  I'm sure it's because he's almost 14 (ugh! I can't believe I just said that) and he's gotten a lot more independent.  He sleeps till noon and then goes to friends' houses.  I hadn't seen him a ton this summer anyway. 

When I was younger I went to summer camp for a week every year.  I would fantasize about seeing my parents at the end of the week and how they would be SOOOOO excited to see me.  They would run up and give me a huge hug and tell me how much I was missed.  That never happened.  My parents love me, and they are great parents, but they have 4 daughters and I was almost always gone during harvest, the busiest time of the year.  I doubt they noticed I was gone.  But I was so bummed when I didn't ever get that hug from them.  I MUST remember this when Damian comes home from visiting my parents every year.  No matter how old he is.  I'm sure he has the same type of thoughts I did about how much I'm supposed to miss him.

This morning I literally dragged myself out of bed to run.  I HATE early mornings.  But last night I ate like crap.  Seriously, I did soooo good all day, and then I decided to cook dinner because Chris was busy.  (He normally cooks Thursday night.)  It was an easy dinner, Banquet fried chicken (I know, very healthy), mashed potatoes, and corn.  I love Banquet fried chicken.  I think it's the crust/skin that I like the most (the healthiest part, right?) Well, I limited myself to one piece of white meat (I like the dark meat) and a small helping of potatoes.  Ugh, then I went in a half hour or so after dinner and had a piece of dark meat.  And THEN I was on facebook and a friend said she was going to cook a cake in a mug, yum!  So I thought, it's been a long time since I had one of those, so I made one . . .  with butterfinger ice cream.  It was delicious.  My only saving grace is that instead of getting more ice cream to finish off the "cake" when I ran out, I threw the rest of the cake away.  (This is why the scale always says 165.8.)

 Also, I won't have time later tonight because I'm going to my parents' house.  And I didn't run yesterday. (I pushed myself too hard Wednesday and my leg was really sore, so I decided to give it a rest and I'm glad I did, it felt fine today.) So after thinking of all of this at 5:30am, I decided I needed to go run. I do like the feel of an early morning run.  I like how I feel the rest of the day.  I just really, really hate getting out of bed in order to do it.  And I'm kinda scared to run in the dark, and it's definitely not light out at 5:30am, at least not anymore.  I don't know what I'm going to do this winter when it's dark by the time I get home.  =/  I'm gonna have to get a reflective jacket. 
 I don't normally agree with this saying because I like to run in the afternoon/evening, but if you're going to run in the morning, get up before you can think too much about it, otherwise you'll never get up. =)

It's a love/hate relationship

Yesterday I did the same route running that I did on Monday.  I still really like that run, I just can’t do the hills like I could 6 weeks ago.  However, for whatever reason, I ran a little after 5pm.  This particular route is on fairly busy roads (I actually choose that because I was running in the late evening or early morning and didn’t want to be on the wooded, deserted trail I had been running at those times), and 5pm is a HORRIBLE time to be running on busy roads.  I had a lot of cars watching me and I am so self-conscious about how I look.  I tend to run faster when other people are around.  Well, I knew I should stop and walk for a little bit because of my leg, but I didn’t want to be walking uphill with all the cars going by.  I always feel stupid walking in my running clothes, plus I know I can run up the hill so I want everyone to see me doing it.  Ugh!  Anyway, by the time I was going home and running downhill I knew that I had pushed myself too hard.  My leg was hurting and I knew that I needed to walk.  So I walked about a half mile home. 
I’m not real happy that I pushed myself so hard.  I had to ice my leg last night and took some ibuprofen  and this morning I can definitely feel it.  It’s not horrible, but it is not really good.  I want to go for a run today, but I don’t know if it’s such a good idea.  Maybe Chris will go wogging with me.  =)
After my run yesterday, I did the kettlebell exercises I posted about yesterday.  My legs are KILLING me!  Those squats are horrible!  I would actually prefer my arms to be sore, but they aren’t at all. 



I get behind in my reading blogs, but I can usually catch up in a day or two.  Anyway, Katie summarized running perfectly in yesterday's entry.
"I LOVE--dripping sweat, torching calories, using my muscles, feeling a little sore and spent, being able to eat yummy treats with the calories burned, sleeping better, relieving stress.
I HATE--running."

I think I mostly agree with her.  I love all that she mentioned, but I'm not sure I hate running.  I love it when I get about 10 min into my run and I've hit my stride.  But I hate the first part of it, and sometimes the last 5 min or so.

This morning I stepped on the scale, and guess what?  I didn't see 165.8 again . . . I saw . . . 165.2.  I know it's not great, but it's way better than seeing the same number again.  Other than the incredibly huge caloric meal I had on Tuesday, I have been really, really good with my eating.  I'm eating more vegetables and trying to be super conscious about what is going into my mouth.  I feel good about it.  =)

Anyone have Myfitnesspal?  I joined it and really like the way they track food and exercise.  But I only have one friend on it.  I would love to have more friends on there, so if you have it my username is cathyjanew.  Add me.  =)

Kettlebells and Margaritas

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’ve quit updating my weight.  This has been a sore point with me.  Every single morning for the last 2 weeks, I have weighed 165.8.  That exact number, no variations.  I have had a few lower numbers (even 161.8 once) and some higher ones (168 last night!) at various times during the day, but 165.8 has been the number I am when I’m naked in the morning after using the bathroom.  It is incredibly discouraging for me, but I also realize that I haven’t been extremely active the last few weeks.  This week I started running again.  I’ve logged 7 miles since Friday.  I did 7 miles in two days June30th and July1st.  So it’s a bit discouraging as well, but I’m happy to be running again.  Anyway, this week I have also been counting calories.  I am really bad at it, but I realize I need to in order to lose anymore weight.  I have been trying to watch what I eat, instead of a small bowl of butterfinger ice cream (yum!!) I ate a carrot.  30 calories instead of 110 . . .
Monday I did 3 workouts.  Chris worked late and I wanted to run but didn’t want to take Maddox.  So while I waited for him to come home I did Just Dance for a half hour.  He got home and because of his incredibly long day on Sunday, and then another long day Monday he wanted to take a nap (he has Tues-Thurs off).  So while he took a nap I did some sit-ups  and then decided to try a couple of workouts I had found on Pinterest. 



Those kettlebell swings really worked me out.  Yesterday I woke up feeling a little sore, but this morning I could barely crawl out of my bed.  My legs are really sore, probably from the squats.
Anyway, after Chris woke up I went for a 2.4 mile run, and was mostly uphill.  This particular route had become my favorite run right before I went on vacation in June and then hurt my leg when I came home.  It is a 4 mile run, and I love it, uphill at the beginning (which I don’t really love) but that means it’s all downhill going home (which I love and makes me feel like I had a good run afterwards).   There was no way I would have been able to do the full 4 miles this time, but I really enjoyed the 2.4 I did do. 
Actually I modified it a little this time and ended up going through a cemetery.  I have always loved cemeteries.  I wrote a post about it a couple days after Memorial Day.  You can read it here.  Anyway, while I was running through the cemetery on Monday I was straining my neck looking at all the dates and headstones.  I would like to wander that cemetery extensively and look for the gentleman that owned our house before we bought it.  I’m sure I could find him an easier way, but an excuse to wander the cemetery is always good.  =)
Yesterday I did not exercise at all.  We went out on a date.  Immediately after work we were going to go to a movie, but our babysitter had an appt and didn’t get there in time for us to go to the early movie.  Instead we went to Walmart to do a little shopping (how lame, our date started at Walmart).  Then we spent 2 and a half hours at the Outback Steakhouse (waiting for our movie).  It was a really good meal.  I felt like I made mediocre meal choices, I stopped eating the blooming onion before it was gone, I had a salad, and instead of a big steak I had grilled lobster (which the menu said was lower calorie) and I didn’t eat all the potato.  However, I had a really good margarita and then Chris ordered a sample margarita mix for me (3 different margaritas in smaller glasses).  Because it was spaced out over a large amount of time, I didn’t feel buzzed when we left, but I felt really, really full.  I was trying to avoid that, but I eat too quickly (always have) and didn’t realize how full I was until we were walking to the car. 
 We saw The Campaign with Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis.  It was pretty good. Will Ferrell movies are hit or miss for me.  Sometimes I like them and sometimes I don't.  Usually the reason I don't like them is because they can get really corny and over-the-top stupid funny.  This one definitely had some of that in the middle of the movie, where I was thinking I just want it to be over and go home, but it ended good.  I think I liked it.  =)
Today I’m going to run again and do the kettlebell swing exercise.  I like the feel of the sore muscles and want them to get stronger.  I think I will incorporate that exercise into my weekly routine.  I really like it.  And I am thinking I’ll look up some more kettlebell exercises.  =)

Stop by and FMM

My weekend was very uneventful.  We went from 90 degrees on Friday to 67 on Saturday.  It was a nice break, but I was looking forward to some sun time this weekend.  Even though I was looking forward to the warm weather this weekend, the crisp morning yesterday made me long for the fall.  I love the fall.  I wanted to break out my sweaters and boots this morning.

I went for a run Saturday morning with Maddox, and was able to go 2.67 miles.  I walked quite a bit, but mostly because of my leg, not because of my endurance.  I think I could have run more (endurance-wise) but my leg hurt a few times so I slowed down.  I am happy with my run.  =)

Yesterday I had every intention of running.  I was going to run in the morning and then decided I’d rather wait till Chris got home so I didn’t have to push the jogging stroller.  It was cool enough, so I was okay with that.  However, Chris called me at 5pm and said that he is still working and could be another 3 hours.  =/  We were also supposed to go on a date last night, which I forgot about, but because he was so late, we ended up postponing it till tomorrow night. 

I spent my entire day listening to Pride and Prejudice online.  I found a website that has classic books for free and P & P is one of my favorites.  I actually started it Saturday, but listened to most of it Sunday.  And when I said I spent my entire day . . . I finished it last night and it’s quite a long book.  I found Angry Birds on Facebook and decided to play that while I listened.  I also did a load of dishes, but that was the extent of my productivity this weekend.

So once again I am behind on getting my posts done over the weekend.  Melinda at Does This Scale Make Me Look Fat has “Stop by and say hi!” every Saturday.  I had every intention of doing it before Monday, but I didn’t.  =)

Where do you find new recipes to try?I use google, a lot.  I got sick of our “go to” recipes, so now I just google “chicken breast” or whatever I’m making that night and find something that I have.  I have also been doing some recipes I’ve seen on Pinterest, which for the most part, has been very good.

Inappropriate Questions

1. Will you vote in the upcoming presidential election?  I haven’t completely decided.  I am not into politics AT ALL but . . . I dislike both candidates . . . A LOT. So this may be the first election since I turned 18 that I don’t vote in, well, at least for President.  I have thought about just writing in Mickey Mouse or something so I can say I voted.  I’m a firm believer in “if you didn’t vote you don’t have a right to complain.”  Also, WA is such a liberal state it doesn’t matter who I voted for, WA electoral votes will go to the democratic nominee (Pres. Obama).
2. Do you say curse words? No, I try not to.  Hell and crap have made it into my vocabulary, but that’s about it.  I was raised that “gosh” was a bad word, so hell and crap are pretty extreme.  =)  I have been known to say the “f” word when I’m really, really mad at Chris.
3. Have you ever kissed a stranger? Yes, and I think everyone should do it at some point.
4. If you could choose to meet only one fellow blogger in person right now who would you choose? I’m not sure.  I love everyone I follow.  =)  I think I would have to go with Monica, she can be found at Fat Girl Finding Fit.  She is a great inspiration. 
5. What is the most inappropriate pick-up line that anyone has ever used on you?  I don’t remember a specific pick-up line.  I will say my most inappropriate pick-up was by my neighbor. 
6. Do you sing in the shower?  No, but I will sing loudly in the car.  And have even sung while I run.  I really don’t care what people think of me, I’m running because I like it, and I sing the songs I love.  =)  However, I try not to sing so people can actually hear me while I’m running.  If they are driving by, who cares, but if I’m running behind them . . . yeah, they don’t need to listen to me.
7. How often do you get drunk?  I don’t really get drunk, but I drink occasionally.  I enjoy getting drunk once in a great while, but considering I had never been drunk until my 30th birthday, I don’t feel the desire or need to do it all the time.  I would say not even once a month, probably not even once every other month.
8. Have you ever been fired from a job?  No, I was laid off because of budget cuts, from my favorite job, but never actually fired.
9. Were you popular in high school? No, not at all.  I grew up in a tiny, tiny town (500 people, 14 in my graduating class) and I was 2nd cousins to two people in my class.  They were very popular, and I didn’t get along with them, so I was not.  The way I am now, I think I probably would be more popular, but I’m not worried about it.  I didn’t want to be popular back then.  I didn’t care what people thought of me.  (I wish I could go back to that.)

Western WA heat wave!

I went for a run today.  A real, honest-to-goodness run.  I ran for 2 miles (1.97, does anyone else get mad when you're under your goal by a tiny bit?) and I had no problems with my leg.  I did have problems with my stamina.  It is so frustrating to know that 5 weeks ago I was running 4 miles every day. Today I barely made 2 miles and I felt as if I had run 4 miles. 

I am extremely happy to know that I can run with little, to no pain.  (I did wear my ace bandage.)  However, it is so hot out right now, I can only go running in the late, late evening, or early morning (which I did today).  The problem with the late evening, it is still warm.  The problem with the early morning . . . is it's early!  =)

I realize the heat here is much cooler than the rest of the nation's heat wave this summer.  Mid-80's to 90, seems so low compared to the 100+ temps elsewhere, but there is no airconditioning in western WA.  I don't know why, but I guess someone decided that the month and a half of summer here doesn't deserve to have airconditioning.  So, when your house is 80+ degrees and the outside is the same . . . it is very hot.  Actually, in the evenings when the temperatures are going down, the house is still at least 80 degrees. 

Our house has no windows that open, other than 2 of the bedrooms.  It's an old house with old windows.  So we open the door, but we have an indoor-only cat and the mosquitoes here are TERRIBLE this year.  So opening the door isn't always a good thing. 

Anyway, I'm not sure how I'm going to get my run in this weekend.  The temperatures are supposed to stay high and the best time to run is the morning.  However, Chris leaves for work at 6:30am, so I have to run at 5:30am, unless I want to take Maddox, and I don't want to take Maddox.

Wogging

There is something about knowing you can't have something that makes you want it even more.  I quit watching what I was eating so much about a month ago and have been eating whatever junk I wanted.  It wasn't a ton of junk, but I wasn't telling myself to stop eating, eat less, or you can't have that chocolate bar.  This week I have really tried to contain myself again and it is HARD. 

All I can think about is what I can I eat?  There is a person that works in my building that always has a candy bowl, good candies, like mini butterfingers, or tootsie rolls, or just about anything, and I haven't really visited it much the last few months, but suddenly yesterday, that was all I could think about.  I want some candy. 


Tuesday I did really well on my eating and then guess what, after dinner I ate a bunch of crap.  Not even because I was hungry, just because I couldn't stop thinking about having something else.  I haven't kept snack food in my house for a long, long time (longer than my wanting to lose weight) but with a baby that is constantly hungry, I have started keeping crackers or cookies for him to snack on.  And I WANT IT! 

Yesterday morning a drug rep. came in with breakfast (this happens regularly when drug companies want to sell their particular drug, and working in the mental health industry we get them a lot).  He had bagels and pastries galore, and I love all forms of pastries.  I resisted all morning, but I walked into the break room right after lunch for some water, and there was one lone bagel left.  I took it . . . HOWEVER, I put it back.  =)  One small victory for me.   

Tuesday I went running.  I did a lot of walking, but I actually ran for a good bit of the way.  It was nice.  I have been wrapping my leg with an ace bandage and it seems to be working good.  I have also been walking with a little bit of jogging with Chris now and then.  We went "wogging" yesterday evening, and my leg seems to be doing well.

When I first started running I was mentally holding myself back.  I would get to a certain spot and stop and walk because I thought I needed to.  However, my body was perfectly capable of running farther.  I just needed to get my brain on track to realize that I didn't need to stop when it said I did.  Now I feel it's the other way.  My brain says "keep going, you can do it" but my leg says "no you should stop so I don't hurt more." 

Actually, both voices might be my brain.  My brain is saying to stop because I don't want to have to stop running for another 2 weeks.  So who knows, maybe my body is able, and my brain is holding me back.  I just really don't want to hurt myself worse. 

Today I'm going to run by myself.  I'm looking forward to it.  I have noticed on my "wogs" with Chris that after the first 10 or 15 min, my leg feels really, really good.  No soreness at all.  And in fact, when I take the bandage off at home my leg doesn't hurt at all.  I have no soreness at all.  Sometimes when I am running, but nothing like before.  I think I will continue with the bandage but up my running a little.  Like I said before, though, I am really scared to hurt myself again.  

I have also been doing "Just Dance 3" on the Xbox Kinnect.  I think it's a lot of fun, and I seem to be getting a good workout in.  My back has been really sore (muscle sore) the last few days.  =)  Who knew playing a game could be so much exercise.  =)

 Fess up, what is your guilty TV pleasure?
I have to say . . . am I embarrassed by this a little? maybe . . . that my guilty pleasure on the TV is all Real Housewives on Bravo.  My favorite is Real Housewives of Orange County, but I watch them all.  In fact, I watch several Bravo shows and like most of them.  I have had to cut back on most of them because my other guilty TV pleasure is Survivor, Big Brother, and Amazing Race.  I also just recently got hooked on The Bachelor/Bachelorette (which I actually don't like, but it has sucked me in).  So I guess I could say that reality TV (the most stupid ones) are my guilty TV pleasures.  =)

In the Kitchen


1. How often do you cook at home? I cook about twice a week, but Chris also cooks twice a week and then we have leftovers.  We have had Damian cook at least once a week, but he got really, really busy with sports over the school year and we stopped that and didn't pick it back up when he wasn't busy anymore.
2. Do you eat more fresh produce, frozen or canned produce? I am super picky about my fresh fruit, especially apples.  I will spend 15 min picking out 5 apples.  And I refuse to eat any canned vegetables.  I'll eat fresh if I have it, but it's mostly frozen veggies.
3. What are a few unusual staples that can always be found in your kitchen? I don't know . . . Chris loves cheese, so we ALWAYS have Tillamook cheddar cheese.  Tortilla shells . . . Almond flour to make my one min. muffins, oh and spinach for my green drink
4. Look in your fridge, then tell us about the healthiest thing in there. Spinach.
5. Now share the most unhealthy thing in it. Mayo and Chris' cream of potato soup, yum!
6. Do you eat leftovers? Yes, all the time, mostly for lunch.
7. Do you use coupons at the supermarket? I was trying to, but then stopped.
8. How often do you try new recipes? I was trying one all the time, but found several new ones I like, so I stopped.  We are creatures of habit.
9. Do you make grocery lists? Do you stick to them? Sometimes I make lists, but not always.
10. If you could buy one food item that would magically be calorie-free, which item would you choose? margaritas  ; )

What a long week!

I can't believe I went a whole week without posting anything.  I told myself when I started this that I would post every single day.  Well, that quickly turned into everyday except on the weekends.  And here it is 100 posts in and I went an entire week!  And the week before that it was sporadically. Hopefully you all are still reading even though I've been MIA. I will endeavor to be better.  I think my brain doesn't work as well when I'm not running . . . and I'm still not running.  =(

I went to my parents' house last weekend.  While I was there I decided to go for a walk and maybe run a little and see how my leg was.  I ran a little and felt great.  No pains, nothing.  When I got home I talked Chris into going for a walk with a little bit of a run with me and he agreed.  Again, no problems at all with my leg.   So the next day I went for a run with some walking and my leg started hurting again.  Ugh!!  However, it's not terrible.
While at my parents' house I like to sit on their front porch and drink my coffee in the morning.  They have tons of birds and you can't beat the view.

My nephew came back with me on Tuesday.  We did a lot of things, and I am exhausted!  We actually started out at my parents' house over the weekend.  Sunday we went boating with my parents, that was a lot of fun.

Monday we went swimming at a local lake. 

Tuesday we came home, a 4 hour drive that took 7 hours. My car started overheating on the way up the first hill to go up the mountains. I stopped in Ellensburg, which is about halfway, and had a mechanic look at it. After 3 hours and $82 dollars later it was determined that my radiator cap was bad and I needed a new one. Thankfully, that was all it was, but it made the day really, really long.

Wednesday we went to the Skagit County Fair. 



After the fair on Wednesday we went to a drive in theater and watched Diary of a Wimpy Kid Dog Days and Batman: Dark Knight Rises.



Thursday we went to Lake Padden and went swimming.  (Which I got no pictures of because I forgot.)

Friday we went to visit my sister and went to Jetty Island and then to the local swimming pool. 


Friday evening my sister came over with her daughter to pick up my nephew.  Saturday we were supposed to go back to Lake Padden to swim however, my sister didn't feel like going so I took all the kids to a park that has water sprinklers.


And yesterday they went home, taking Damian to my parents' house for 2 weeks. It was very warm here, so I took Maddox outside to play in the sprinkler.

Whew!  I am exhausted just thinking about it all!

I have so much more to write about, but this has turned into quite a long post with all the pictures, so maybe I'll save the rest for tomorrow.  =)

 Little More Personal

1. Are you a morning person? I have become a morning person.  When I was younger I hated waking up early, now I like having a quiet morning before everyone else is up.  In fact, I dragged myself out of bed this morning just before 6:30 just so I could have a little quiet time before Maddox woke up.  However, I do not like to work out in the morning before work.  That would require that I get up about 5:30 and that is just too early for me.
2. Are you an introvert or an extrovert?  Once again, when I was younger I was definitely introverted.  I still consider myself mostly introverted, but I have become more comfortable with others, especially people I know, so I am able to speak up more now.
3. Are you addicted to anything? If so, what? I don't think so.  Maybe I'm in denial, but I really can't think of anything. 
4. How many times have you been in love? 2 times
5. What is your position on politics? My politics are a little skewed.  I was raised conservative, but  I work in a very liberal profession, so I tend to have some conservative views and some liberal views.  I am not one or the other.
6. Are you religious? I am not religious, I'm a Christian, there's a difference. 
7. Would you prefer backpacking or a luxury hotel? I've actually never stayed in a luxury hotel, but I'd love, LOVE to.  However, backpacking would be fun too.  =)
8. Do you have/want pets? I have a cat, Pandora, and a dog, Gizmo.  I would like another cat.
9. Are you a sports fan? sometimes, I like hockey, but don't watch it much and I like football and watch it with my husband. 
10. How often do you brush your teeth? At least a few times a day.
11. Do you have tattoos and/or piercings?  My ears and my nose are pierced and I have 3 tattoos.
12. What’s your favorite clothing brand? I don't have one.  I'm not picky . . . I might be if I was rich =) 
13. Should a man open doors for a woman? Yes, always.
14. Which season is your favorite? Fall is my favorite but I love all seasons and would love to live in an area where they were more pronounced.
15. Would you rather eat less or workout more? I would much rather work out. But it’s not enough if I want to lose weight.
16. What’s your idea of romance?  My husband cleaning house . . . seriously. 
17. How often do you do things that are outside of your comfort zone? I have been trying very hard at leaving my comfort zone, and I think I've gotten okay at it.  I could do much, much better though. 
18. Christmas or Halloween? Christmas
19. Would you rather live in the country or the city? Country, but close to town.
20. Share your life philosophy.  Live Love.  I want to get it tattooed on my foot.

If it's good enough for Lance Armstrong . . .

I started this yesterday (Friday) and forgot to finish it.  Sorry!

I have not fallen off the face of the Earth.  I know all 7 of you were worried.  =)  I just haven't had a lot to talk about lately.  I am still unable to run, which is really, really frustrating for me. I have been trying to walk to work everyday, however, sometimes I need my car, so I have to drive.  Tuesday and Thursday this week I drove.  However, on Tuesday I was able to get a 4 mile walk in after work.  Thursday, Damian had his Little League All-Stars BBQ celebrating the end of the season so I wasn't able to do any type of exercise.  Immediately after leaving work I had to go to the bbq and we didn't get home till after 8pm. 

The numbers on the scale started out great this week.  I was seeing 162's and 162's (even saw 157, I was jumping up and down then I realized the scale was sitting on a plastic hanger making it incorrect).  Then Thursday I saw 165 again.  It's so frustrating!  I know I could do better on the eating, and I could find some sort of worthwhile exercise to do on the TV.  It's just so boring to exercise to the TV.  I weighed myself after walking home on Friday and I was 162.8, so that's not bad.  :-)

This morning I went to eastern WA to pick up my nephew.  I am here till Tuesday and then he's coming back with me for the rest of the week.  I hope to do lots of active activities and maybe by the end of the week I'll be able to run again.

Tomorrow my parents are planning on taking us boating. I'm super excited about that.  Riding the inner tube behind the boat is really good exercise and I think I'm going to try to squeeze in some regular swimming as well.  I'm really looking forward to it.  Last year I didn't make it on the boat because I was pregnant in the beginning of the summer and then had a newborn the rest of the summer.

I have been thinking about getting some sort of tape to put on my calf so I can run, I've seen it on athletes on the Olympics, and saw a commercial for it, but can't remember what's it's called.  I was wondering if it would help.  I guess I'll have to google search it and see what I can find out.

After a google search I found this article, and it sound like I have Calf strain grade 1.  Everything sounds almost exactly like what happened.  It says that it should only take 2 weeks to heal, however, I went running last weekend and probably damaged it again, so I think I have to start my two weeks over from last Saturday.  =( 

I was also able to find an article about kinesio tape, however, it's an article saying there is very little evidence suggesting that the tape is helpful. Here is an interesting page about a specific brand of kinesio tape and here is another interesting site.  Apparently, Lance Armstrong has been using it for a long time.

My Mom suggested that I put an ace bandage on my leg when I go running, so I may try that . . . next weekend. 

I will try to do better about posting.  I don't like the fact that I went almost 5 days without posting anything.  I think running makes my brain work better and gives me something to talk about.  =)
