Catching up

For the first time since starting my blog, I forgot about it.  Even when I don't post, I always think about "needing" to post.  This weekend was so incredibly busy for me, it didn't even cross my mind.

Friday Chris and I did some last min shopping, and then Saturday I had to go back to get the things we forgot.  I did start a new tradition this year (well, I've started several) but this year Damian, Maddox and I (Chris had to work) went to Walmart and bought 2 $25 gift cards.  Then we went to the toy section and wandered around people watching.  I wanted to find someone that looked like they didn't have a lot of money, and had at least one kid.  It's hard to know if someone has money or not, people don't exactly dress up to go shopping at Walmart.  Anyway, I saw one young mother with a baby, and she looked like she was having a very bad day (red eyes) so I gave her one of my gift cards.  The second one was harder.  D and I thought about giving a card to a Walmart employee.  They are often grumpy and rude, but then I would be too if I worked at Walmart, and they only get minimum wage and have horrible hours and have to deal with extremely rude Walmart customers and never get thanked.  Anyway, I didn't really know if an employee would accept a card from a shopper so I decided to find another shopper.  I gave my second card to 2 females that looked young that had 4 kids between them.  Anyway, I thought it was fun and next year I plan to do it again, maybe I'll be a bit better organized about my picking out people.  I kinda felt creepy wandering around the toy department for 20 min not even looking at the toys. =)

My dad gave me a lot of Christmas money and then Chris and I received a larger check from his grandparents.  So I used that money to buy a treadmill.  I haven't set it up yet.  It's a lot bigger than I was thinking in my head and honestly, I don't know where I'm going to put it.  We have room in our bedroom, but a friend of ours is moving in with us for a couple months (she's young, she lived with us 2 years ago for a year and she has to get out of her apt soon) and she is going to be taking over Maddox's room.  Which means Maddox will be sleeping in a playpen in our room so there's no room for the treadmill now.  =/  (I'm not really happy about it, but I'm not going to let her live on the street.)  Now I don't know where to put the treadmill.  I thought it would fit in our living room, but no way, it's way too big. . . ugh.  I now have a very expensive box behind my couch.  =(

So, Saturday after Walmart and getting the treadmill I made fudge and pies.  Then I made more fudge . . .  Yesterday I made more fudge, peanut brittle, Christmas cookies, and a cheeseball.  Then we had to decorate the cookies and wrap some presents.  We decided to watch the Seahawks game while decorating the cookies and wrap presents.  )We had to record the game because we were busy while it was actually on.)  Anyway, we started the Seahawks game late, and I started drinking early . . . so the presents didn't get wrapped.  We wrapped a couple, which I barely remember, but mostly we have all the presents to wrap tonight.  I usually try to wrap them earlier so I can put them under the tree, but with Maddox we can't do that this year.

Today I'm at work and then going home to make Christmas Eve dinner.  We have some friends coming over for dinner and presents.  Tomorrow is going to be kinda chill.  Just our family opening presents in the morning.  In the evening we're going to Chris's Mom's house to borrow her all-wheel drive SUV, so we'll probably do presents there.  (She has never invited us over, nor accepted an invite from us, for any holiday, ever, so this is very unusual.  Last year we got our Christmas presents in February when we went in for dentist appts-she works at a dentist office where we get free dental.)

Wednesday we are driving to eastern WA to spend one day with Chris's Dad, then Thursday going to my parents' house.  My sister, who lives in N. Carolina, is already there with her husband and one yr old son.  I haven't met her son at all, so I'm really excited about seeing her and her son.

So . . . all this means this will probably be my one and only post this week.  I don't know if I will have time or the desire to get online and post anything.  And I can't post anything through the app on my phone.

However, it is Friend Makin' Monday, so I will get on with it.  =)

FMM ~ Twelve in '12

I was unable to go for a run yesterday, which I knew would happen.  Today I'm going to go during my lunch.  If I don't, I may not be able to go later, and then that will be 4 days of no running.  I did get out my old Just Dance 3 and did that for about 45 min, but it's not nearly as good of a workout as running or zumba class.  I barely broke a sweat (barely).

I got some Christmas money from my Dad, and our family got some from Chris's grandparents, that I get a small portion of, so I am going to buy a treadmill.  Then, on days like yesterday, I can just jump on that and get a run in even though it's dark.  I almost went running after Damian's game.  We got home at 6:30, and I've run that late before, however, that was in the summer and it wasn't dark.  I almost went, but then psyched myself out and ended up not going.  I really wish I had a running partner that I could go with.  I would have ran yesterday if I had someone go with me.  I have pepper spray and a reflector vest and can run on busy roads, it just scares me.  Oh well, this time next year I will have a treadmill.  =)

I can't wait for it to start getting lighter in the evenings.  Not only is Dec 21 the end of the world ; ) it's also the shortest day of the year.  So next week the days will start getting lighter.  Of course, that won't happen suddenly, but at least I'll know that in a few months I'll be able to run in the evenings again.  =)

Does it seem like there are more runners and running pictures and sayings then there used to be??  Maybe I just notice them now because I am running, but I notice it everywhere.  There was even a commercial for yesterday and the lady on it said she runs marathons.  I see it everywhere . . .

Well, yesterday was Friend Makin' Monday.  The questions this time didn't really have a lot to do with me, but I thought I'd do it anyway.  So I'm sorry if my answers are so lame this time.  =)

Twelve in 2012

1. What was your greatest personal accomplishment in 2012?  hmmmm . . . I don't know.  Running is probably the biggest accomplishment I have.

2. What’s the best thing your did for your health?  I started running, seriously running.  I was running a little before I got pregnant in 2010, but not seriously.  This year I have really pushed myself to get better.

3. Share one thing that caused a significant change in your life this year.  The biggest change in my life was born in 2011, but he continues to grow and grow which causes every year to be a new change.  =)

4. List a few things that you experienced for the first time at some point over the last twelve months.
- I ran my first 5K.
- I ran my first 10K
- I started Zumba.
- I saved enough money for my little family to be able go to Disneyland this coming Mar (I started saving last Jan or Feb)
- I started this blog

5. What was the coolest place you visited? I haven't been anywhere new this year.  I love, love going to San Juan Island and we did that (again) and we went to Seaside last Feb and I love that too.

6. If you could change one thing about the last year what would it be?  I can't think of anything. I still have not finished the blanket I started for Maddox while I was pregnant.  I should work on it . . .

7. What is the best meal you ate this year? I couldn't tell you. . .

8. Tell us about a new friend you made.  I don't really make friends very easily.  So I don't believe I made a new friend.

9. What did you hope to accomplish this year that you did not?  Again, I can't think of anything.  Maybe talking my husband into one more kid?  =)
10. Share something you learned in 2012.  I learned that I can run 6 miles without dying.  =)  Now I just need to push it to 10 miles.

11. Share an odd and unexpected thing that you experienced this year.  I didn't have anything odd or unexpected . . . I live such a boring life.

12. How do you think 2013 will differ from 2012?  I think it will be pretty much the same.  Maddox will continue to grow and amaze me with his feats of daring.  Damian gets bigger by the second and will continue on his sports.
We are going to Disneyland at the end of Feb, beginning of March.
I hope to lose some more weight, but who knows.  Even though I'm (still) at 160 the size 10 pants that I got a month or so ago that were snug, are no longer so snug, so that is good.  Maybe I'll be the skinniest 160 lb 5'4" woman out there.  =)

Now it’s your turn!  Don’t forget to come back and link up in the comments!

Exercise streak . . . kaput

I'm currently reading a book titled "Getting Over It."  I like "girly" books that are just that, aimed towards females, usually have a romantic part in them, but are not smut . . . think "Confessions of a Shopaholic" or something along those lines.  Anyway, in this book the main character's father dies very unexpectedly.  This book has made me think a bit about my parents.  I am at an age where I think about my parents dying, they are getting older, 67 (I think), and my Dad's health is not very good.  He's been a farmer his entire life and my Mom is a terrible cook so there's lots and lots of processed, high sodium foods in their diets, and he's overweight and doesn't take care of himself (neither does my Mom).   Last year he had a minor heartattack and was told to lose weight, which he hasn't done.

Anyway, my sisters and my Mom and I have talked about what would happen when my Dad dies.  What my Mom would do, where she would live, things like that.  But lately I've wondered "what would happen if my Mom were to be the one that died first."  It happens.  One person is the one in bad health, and then suddenly the spouse dies unexpectedly.

It scares me to death to think of one of my parents dying, and yet they are not young anymore.  They will die eventually, most likely before I do.  My Dad's dad died in his early 50's of a heart attack.  My Mom's dad died in his mid-70's.  My Dad's mom died at 79 and my Mom's mom died in her early 80's.  These aren't necessarily young numbers (well, expect for my paternal Grandpa), but they are coming quicker than I expected.  Already my parents are close to being 70 and while I like to think of them as younger people, there are tell-tale signs that they are getting older.

My Dad's hearing is horrible.  My Mom's coordination sucks.  In one email she can describe 5 (minor) incidents where she hurt herself.  She was an RN at a nursing home until this year, and she described a horrible incident where she got patients meds screwed up.  If it had been worse, someone could have died from my Mom's mistake.  (I'm thankful no one did, and that she retired, it was time.)

I totally gave up on my exercise streak.  I missed Thursday because of Damian's basketball game.  If I had thought about it, I would have run during my lunch break, but for some reason I thought I would have the opportunity between work and his game.  I completely forgot that I have to drive 40 min to the game which started at 5pm and I get off at 4 . . . Anyway, I was unsure I was going to run that day anyway.

I did do 4.5 miles on Friday, but then on Saturday I was going to go to zumba before going to Lynnwood to see my sister.  Well, zumba was closed that day and I didn't run.  And then yesterday I was completely lazy.  By the time I decided I would go, my phone was almost dead, and I can't run without it.  It has my music (actually, right now I'm listening to an audiobook) and my app that tells me how far/how fast I go.  So already that's 2 days of no running (on a weekend, which is terrible).

Then today is another basketball game, which I will have to drive to (only 20 min this time) but I have court (for work) so I can't go during lunch.  Tomorrow is another basketball game, which is in Mt. Vernon, so I may be able to go right after work, but I'm thinking I probably won't.  I may be able to do a short run during lunch tomorrow though, so we'll see.  Wednesday is a hair appt, but I should have time afterwards to go . . .

Anyway I'm definitely going to have 3 days in a row of no exercise, with possibly 4 days.  =/

Our chair is old and broken, it flipped over when
Maddox crawled on it with Damian. =)

I need a break

I am so ready for some time off.  Christmas can't come soon enough.  However, I'm only taking 4 days off, I wish it was more, and 3 of those days (plus the weekend) is at my family's house and that is going to be a whirlwind of activity.  I am definitely looking forward to seeing my family, especially my sister and her son, but I just need a break from life for a little bit.  ; )

Maybe to a tropical island . . .
Tonight is Damian's first basketball game.  I love basketball, but the thought of driving 40 min to see a middle school basketball game with a 18 month old in tow, just doesn't sound appealing to me.  I am also torn about getting a run in.  I was thinking that I would have time, but I don't get off work until 4 and then we have to drive, so then I was thinking I would do just 1 mile, but I don't really want to do that tonight either.  So my head keeps saying that I already blew my exercise streak on Sunday, what would it matter if I didn't go today?  But it looks so pretty on my calendar if I have something every day.  =(  I'm torn. . .

I've been thinking about Christmas break at my parents' house and running.  It's going to be cold there, probably colder than it is here.  There probably won't be snow, they don't usually have snow on Christmas.  There is the treadmill but it is horrible.  I saw something about a treadmill being called a hamster wheel, and that really is what it is.  You don't go anywhere.

This weekend I got almost completely caught up on my blog reading, but then my busy, busy Monday and Tuesday I got behind again.  So yesterday I was reading some of them and I came across this post from Adam.
I have seen this picture everywhere and thought it was funny.  Well, it turns out that the guy that took the picture didn't even know it was everywhere.  When he found out he made it a point to track down the guy he took the picture of and do an interview with him.  It was a very, very interesting read.  You can find it here.  =)

Have a great Thursday!

FMM ~ Christmas Questions

I started this yesterday, but my days, especially Monday and Tuesdays, are so busy that I didn't get a chance to finish it.

I have been doing my exercise streak (rather than run streak) fairly well.  I did skip Sunday.  I thought about it all day, but I really just needed a break.  I don't feel very guilty about it, I did need a rest day.  However, I know I will be disappointed in myself later if I can keep the rest of the streak going strong.  Last week I ran for 1 mile on 2 different days.  I ran as hard as I could both times.  The first time I ran across a street and had to stand and wait for the light so my app said I ran a 8:45/min mile.  The second time I really wanted to see how fast I could do one mile without stopping so I started after the light and that one was around a 7:40/min mile.   I definitely couldn't go longer than one mile at that pace, but that is pretty darn good for me.  =)  In fact, one mile felt almost impossible, but I pushed myself and got it done.  I just kept thinking "it's only 9 min, you can run fast for 9 min."  Of course, 9/min miles are what I do when I go for 4-5 mile runs, so I knew that it would actually be shorter.

Anyway, I missed Friend Makin' Monday again but I really like them, so I will continue to do them late.  =)

 Christmas Questions
1. How will you celebrate the holidays this year?  I'm celebrating Christmas Eve with some friends, then my husband and kids on Christmas day.  The day after Christmas we're going to eastern WA to celebrate with my family.  My sister, who lives in N. Carolina, is going to be here with her husband and 15 month old son, who I've never met, so that will be really awesome.  It will be the first Christmas that all 4 of us sisters will be at my parents house for Christmas since Tami moved to N. Carolina 10+ years ago.

2. What’s the weather currently like where you live? Rainy . . . and about 40*  I hope it snows soon, but we don't have a lot of snow until January or February usually.

3. Do you decorate your home for the holidays? If so, share a picture please!  Yes, I love to decorate my house.  Unfortunately, we don't have a ton of decorations, but I put up what we do have.  I don't have a picture other than the one of our elf on the shelf, Frederick.  This was his first night in our house.  =)
4. What is your favorite Christmas movie?  I love all Christmas movies.  =)  My all time favorite are the kids shows, Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph, Frosty.  But I also love the old movies, Miracle on 34th Street, Holdiay Inn, White Christmas, the Bishop's Wife . . . and of course, A Christmas Story.  I've never been a huge fan of Elf, but it's okay.  =)
5. What is your favorite Christmas songs?  I love so many!  Baby, It’s Cold Outside, Santa Baby, What Child is This, Joy to the World (especially Faith Hill's version) . . . all of them, really.

6. Do you have an advent calendar?  I do.  I made one about 10 years ago.  It was my first ever cross stitch project.  I love it.  I never completely finished it because I didn't quite know what I wanted to do, and still don't.  But it goes up every year.  =)

The picture is, obviously, a few days old.  =)  The yellow space on the bottom, according to the directions, is supposed to say "Santa's Workshop."  However, I decided I would rather put my last name there, but I haven't done it yet.

7. Do you prefer color lights or white lights?  I think white is so elegant, but the colorful ones are my favorite.  My husband loves blue lights, so we have a lot of blue lights outside (which is his domain) but I do put a foot down to blue icicle lights.  Icicles are white . . . :-)  But we have a few colored nets outside, and our tree is colored lights.  I used to have only white lights on the tree, but I missed the colorful trees of my youth, so I changed to colored ones a few years ago.

8. What is your favorite food to eat over the holidays?  Peppermint!!!  I LOVE peppermint.  Sadly, I can't find peppermint ice cream anywhere.  I also like fudge and peanut brittle, which I make because no one I know makes it.  :-)

9. Do you display a live tree, or do you prefer fake trees?  A live tree.  I love live trees, but hate the mess.  Once I said I would never get a fake one, but I actually found myself considering it this year.  I'm not there yet, but I can see why people go with fake trees.  Besides, if we got a fake tree I wouldn't me able to do the tree farm that has become one of my favorite traditions.

10. What would you need to make your holiday perfect this year?  My family.  That's it.  I want my family to be around me and happy. =)

Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions!  Don’t forget to come back and link up in the comments!

Santa picture and a Christmas tree

I had really good intentions to try to catch up on my blog reading this weekend.  I am sooooo far behind.  I got behind at Thanksgiving and then I've been pretty busy since then and haven't read as much as I usually do.  When I have a few moments lately, I've been trying to write something so I haven't read as much as I'd like to.  In all the people that I follow, they are still on Thanksgiving.  =)

Anyway, at Frickin' Fabulous at 40 Linda posted this article about pledging to run at least 1 mile every day after Thanksgiving through the first of the year.  I really like the idea, so I have decided to do it.  Since I didn't read the article until last Friday, I (obviously) was unable to start until then.  And then I modified it to fit me, and decided that I would do some sort of exercise every day, instead of just running.  I like to do zumba, but I don't feel like I have enough time to go for a mile run and go to zumba, so if I'm doing zumba I'm not going to run.  However, on my rest days, I will run the 1 mile.

It definitely motivated me to go to zumba Saturday morning.  It was supposed to be super windy here Saturday and as you all know, I hate the wind, so I decided to go to zumba instead, especially since I missed it on Tuesday.  Zumba starts at 9am on Saturday, and I am usually still drinking coffee and starting my day at that time (I'm usually awake at 7, just slower to get my day going on the weekend).  Anyway, the thought of a horrible run in the wind really made me get out the door at 8:50 (zumba is really close).  Man, Saturday is the day everyone does zumba!  It was really crowded, 10 min to get there, get checked in, and reserve my back row spot was not enough time.

Last week was another blur.  Thursday we went to Lynnwood for family pictures.  Like I said on Wednesday (I didn't realize I haven't posted since last Wednesday) we had a groupon for pictures.  A few weeks ago I made the appt at JC Penney, where I thought the groupon was for.  Well, Thursday I decided I should print it out and luckily noticed the groupon was actually for Sears, not Penney's.  Unfortunately, we didn't have an appt at Sears.  I seriously didn't know what to do.  I called my sister in a panic (we were supposed to have dinner with them after pictures).  She said to call Sears and see if they have any appts.  Luckily we were able to get in at 7pm.  So we just rearranged all our plans and did pictures last.

We went to do Santa pictures with Maddox at the mall in Lynnwood because we now had lots of time before pictures and dinner.  I expected to have to wait in line for awhile, but was hoping since it was a week day and before 5, the line wouldn't be too horrible.  To my immense surprise, there was no line at all.  I have never been to that Santa without at least a 2 hour line.  Thinking back though, I always went on Saturday.  Now I know, I need to go on the week day!
We wandered around the mall a little, and ended up buying a stuffed Mickey Mouse for Maddox.  Since we are going to Disneyland in March, we really want him to know, at the very least, Mickey so that it is a little exciting for him.  =)

Anyway, we had dinner with my sister and her husband and then went back to the mall to get our family pictures done.  Last year we went to Walmart and, while the girl was very nice, I was a little disappointed in the professionalism of the photos.  So I thought going to Sears would be better, since they are twice as expensive there.  However, she really rushed us through.  Several of the pictures I'm really unhappy with how I look.  I guess I just expected the photographer to make sure hair and clothes and everything looked good . . . she didn't.  =/  We got very nice pictures, but I was hoping for a little "more."  I guess I need to go to a freelance type photographer, maybe they will be more personable.

After Chris and I got back together we started collecting icicle ornaments for each year we've been together.  We even went back and bought them for all the years before (including years we weren't together because we were always off and on anyway).  But the specific icicles we get are only in a store in Lynnwood.  We started doing it as a couple, but because I am the only one to go to Lynnwood regularly, the task has fallen on me to get them.  We've even had my sister get a couple when I couldn't make it down there.  This year, I decided that since Chris and I were going to be in Lynnwood together, we were going to get our icicle together, like we are supposed to.  So, after pictures we had to go to Wight's (the store) and get the icicle.  I have also been getting an ornament for every year for Damian and I started with Maddox last year, so we wandered around looking ornaments for them.  D had the idea to get a nutcracker with Maddox every year, so he started that too.  Needless to say, we spent a lot of money.  =)

Yesterday, Chris got off early so we went to get a Christmas tree.  We go to a place where you cut your own.  We spent forever looking for a nice tree.  He finally find a beautiful 8 foot tree.  However, our living room isn't that tall, so we cut some of it off.  Well we got home and I thought we still needed to cut more . . . now we have a tree that is shorter than Chris.  =(  I am so annoyed about it.  Every time I look at the tree it makes me even more mad.

We propped it up on cinder blocks to make it a little taller, but it still pisses me off.  Anyway, we got out the lights.  Unfortunately, none of the lights worked, so now we have a tiny tree sitting on cinder blocks with no lights.  Fortunately, Maddox wanted to help and decorated the tree with his socks.  =)
